you probably wouldn't exist if that happen and according to modern scientific theory and logic the sun would become larger and you would burn with the sun before it disappear
but if it suddenly disappears then we wouldn't have plants because the plants needs the energy from the sun and the whole food chain would colapse and humans would strave to death

Well, if the sun dies it would be a really slow proccess, first starting with a little contraction of solar radiation, then comes the Big expansion, if we could life enought to see that it would be a really hot experience (literally), then as the toilet said every plant shall die, every animal would dehidratate and oceans would start to evaporate completely, the sun then shall contract very quick, let imagine we are superman and we survived to the heat of the sun.
This contraction will make the sun look really white and some minute later "BOOOM" a huge explotion inside the sun occurs, all the external layers of the sun shall be launched out of the solar system destroying every trace left of the planets and asteroids and every other thing around it. those gigantic clouds of burning gas would creat a beautiful planetary nebula (google it so you can see how amazing are they). and where the sun was once, will just be a tiny little white star spinnig really fast, so tiny that it would be hard to see it... and thats it...

Hi pratik!

That's a really interesting and scary idea. Click here to read a big discussion about "Effects of Solar absence on Earth" that took place on the Usenet forum sci.astro.amateur.

Some people gave really graphic descriptions, including at least one professional astronomer (Michael Dworetsky).

Good thinkers above.. i appreciate u all above.. but if we imagine about the Sun disappearance, ( i think all the commentators have gone wrong) coz the guy have asked about the disappearance (as if magical) not theoretically (i.e. collapse of star). So if Sun disappears we all will adjust for a month or two, then the earth will get colder n if by any means we develop mutation (to survive in coldness) or any microbiological food.. then we will further continue to Wish Happy New Year 2009.. (lol) .. aint i rite!

Current scientific wisdom suggests that the sun, as a fusion reactor, will shut down in approximately 15 billion years time. Because the sun is a relatively small star it will not become a super nova with a 'big bang'. It is slowly going to burn out and eventually collapse into a black dwarf.

As the process takes place the sun will lose mass which in turn will affect the orbits of all the planets in the solar system which will slowly distance themselves from the sun. Eventually when the 'fire' goes out, all life on earth will be extinguished. With two thirds of the earth covered in oceans these will freeze and the earth will become no more than an uninhabitable block of ice slowly orbiting a large lump of dead rock.

Thank goodness I'm not immortal as I'd rather not be around to witness such an event, inevitable as it may be.
